The Sarah Baartman District Municipality is one of 46 district municipalities in South Africa. Covering 34% of the entire Eastern Cape Province's geographical footprint, the Sarah Baartman District is the largest of the district municipalities in the Eastern Cape and wholly surrounds Nelson Mandela Bay. The Sarah Baartman District Municipality assists 7 local municipalities in providing the services needed by their communities.

The Municipality is headed by Executive Mayor, Cr Khunjuzwa Eunice Kekana and Speaker, Cr Mzimkhulu Njadayi.

  • The Aloe, widely used for medicinal purposes, is naturally found within the Sarah Baartman District.
  • The largest artificial pineapple in the world can be found in Bathurst, in the Ndlambe Local Municipality.
  • The Cathedral of St Michael and St George is one of the most recognised landmarks in Grahamstown, in the Makana Local Municipality.
  • The Sarah Baartman District is the biggest producer of mohair, with as much as 55% of the world's mohair being produced within its borders.
  • The Valley of Desolation in Graaff-Reinet, in the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality, is an icon, must-see attraction.
