Learners Become Handwashing Heroes in Hankey

The Sarah Baartman District Municipality joined hands with the Department of Health, Departments of Education and Social Development, and partners Unilever and Lifebuoy to celebrate Global Handwashing Day 2025 on 15 October at Hankey Primary School under the theme “Be a Handwashing Hero.”

The day highlighted the importance of hand hygiene as a simple but powerful way to prevent illness and promote healthy living. Learners were encouraged to become “handwashing heroes” in their homes and communities by sharing what they learned with their families.

The event featured exciting activities, including a visit from Hlubi the Hippo, Lifebuoy’s mascot, who entertained learners with a fun and educational handwashing dance. The joy and laughter echoed through the school as children danced and learned the correct steps for effective handwashing.

In addition to the fun, the Department of Health provided full health screenings for all learners, while hygiene demonstrations helped reinforce the importance of regular handwashing. Learners also received gift packs to take home — a small reminder that healthy habits start with clean hands.

Several schools, including Hankey Primary, were awarded certificates of participation for their involvement in both Global Handwashing Day 2025 and the Integrated School Health Week Commemoration.

In his welcoming remarks, the Executive Mayor of Sarah Baartman District Municipality, Cllr Deon de Vos, commended the initiative for teaching children lifelong health habits and for bringing together different government departments and private partners in the spirit of collaboration and community well-being.

Through laughter, learning, and teamwork, the day reminded everyone that good hygiene is not just about cleanliness — it’s about care, respect, and protecting the health of our communities.
