SBDM Honours Female Firefighters and Promotes Fire Safety Awareness

In celebration of Women’s Month, the Sarah Baartman District Municipality (SBDM) hosted a Female Firefighters Awards Ceremony in Port Alfred, paying tribute to the remarkable women who risk their lives daily to protect communities across the district.

The event recognised the bravery and dedication of female firefighters who play a vital role in safeguarding lives and property — especially in a district that is highly prone to fires and other disasters.

Speaking at the ceremony, SBDM Municipal Manager, Ms Unati Daniels, commended the award recipients for their courage and unwavering commitment to duty.

“These women put their lives on the line for our safety. Their bravery is an inspiration to all of us, and their contributions to our communities cannot be overstated,” she said.

Portfolio Councillor for Infrastructure Development and Community Services, Cllr Athenkosi Diniso, highlighted the essential role firefighters play in the region.

“Firefighters are the backbone of our district. Given the high-risk nature of our area for fires and disasters, their work is not only invaluable but lifesaving,” he said.

SBDM Speaker, Cllr Nomhle Gaga, also extended her gratitude and admiration to the women honoured on the night.

“As government, we honour the many remarkable women across our district who work tirelessly, often under dangerous conditions, to serve and protect. These firefighters embody the strength of women in our communities,” she remarked.

The evening served not only as a moment of recognition but also as a reminder of the critical contribution of women in emergency services — and the importance of community awareness in preventing fires and reducing risk during the high-fire season.
