Women and Heritage Day Celebration Held in Hankey

23 September 2025

The Sarah Baartman District Municipality (SBDM), in partnership with Kouga Local Municipality and the Commission for Gender Equality, hosted a vibrant Women and Heritage Day Celebration today, 23 September 2025, at the Vusumzi Lando Community Hall in Hankey. The programme, held under the theme “Building Resilient Economies for All”, featured presentations from key stakeholders including the Department of Health, SAPS, Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR), Legal Aid South Africa, the Department of Employment and Labour, and the Gender Commission.

The event opened by Cllr Vuyani Zana, Ward Councillor, and a prayer by Reverend Mbele, followed by a warm welcome from SBDM Portfolio Councilor for Special Projects, Cllr Rune. In his address, Cllr Rune encouraged the community to treat one another with kindness, highlighting that Sarah Baartman District is home to diverse people. He touched on the challenge of teenage pregnancy, urging parents and community members to educate and support young girls, while calling on men to love and protect women and children.

SAPS representative Col. HRR Leslie called on residents to work hand in hand with police to reduce crime in Hankey, encouraging community members to report incidents of gender-based violence, drug abuse, and other criminal activities. He emphasized that fighting crime remains a top priority for SAPS.

Legal Aid South Africa outlined the free services they offer to restore dignity to the less fortunate, including criminal defense, housing matters, divorce cases, and labour-related disputes. They also announced that Hankey residents can access free consultations every Friday, with a toll-free number (0800 110 110) available for legal assistance.

The Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR) shared the various services they provide to farmers, including bursaries for agricultural studies, farmer training, clinics, and animal vaccinations.

The Department of Employment and Labour, represented by Vukile Sityana, informed the community that the department is available every Monday in Hankey to provide labour-related services.

The Department of Health highlighted the services available to the community such as antenatal care, chronic illness support, and general health services. Officials urged parents to play an active role in educating their children about teenage pregnancy and taking responsibility for their wellbeing.

The Commission for Gender Equality, represented by Khaya Kontso, reminded the community that their core mandate is to protect human rights and promote equality for all, regardless of gender.

Cllr Yantolo, the District Commissioner for Women, shared that SALGA represents all local municipalities across South Africa and stands against any practices that suppress women’s rights. She reflected on the importance of preserving heritage, noting that many tribes have lost cultural traditions over time. She also cautioned the community on the dangers of alcohol abuse and how it erodes the values most cultures stand for.

The event was a significant platform for dialogue, education, and empowerment, bringing together government departments, civil society, and the community to address critical social and economic challenges while celebrating the district’s diverse heritage.
